Backing up your personal filesIf you want to copy your phonebook or calendars to the computer this is a useful step. I will be using the program Motorola Phone Tools (MPT). This particular version is 4.3.6c. This does not back up flashes or flexes. Among many other great features, it allows you to synchronize your phonebooks and calendars and load, create and modify ring tones and work with video.I previously had MPT installed but when I plugged in my phone and then started MPT, it needed to update itself and needed to create a new profile for my new phone, so I thought I'd document what I went through. Click "Next >". Highlight what I did here and click "Next >". Click "Next >". Click "Next >". Click "Finish". The program will now start with an interface that looks like the SLVR. I want to back up my phonebook to the computer so I clicked on the "Phonebook" icon on the right. At this screen you can see the program has read my phonebook from the phone and displayed it. I've blurred the names. Look to the left where there is a column of icons and click on the one labeled "Backup/Restore". Now looking over to the options presented on the right, select "Backup". Now you'll be prompted to name this backup so you can later identify it if you need to restore it later. Then select what you want to back up. Click "Next >". When it's done backing up you'll get this screen. Click "Finish". Now if you ever want to restore this backup, click the "Restore" link you see below. Then select the archive you saved earlier at this screen and it will restore it. This is really useful if you have multiple phones and want to share phonebooks and other information. |
You'll get a status bar for each code group that is backed up. It takes
about five minutes. It could take longer if you have added a lot of media
content to your phone.
Once it's done it will return you to the previous screen. You have now backed up your phone with a monster pack that can be flashed using Flash & Backup 3 or RSD Lite. |
This brings the open file dialog box up and I found the file I wanted to flash and selected "Open". Now you see my monster pack and all the code groups selected. I then clicked the "Write data" button. |
It sent the loader just fine. It sent the CG1 just fine. It then froze when it got to the CG2 (the flex). Looking at my phone I noticed that there was a SIG ERROR on my bootloader screen. I had no choice but to force quit the Flash & Backup program. The phone was stuck in bootloader mode even after removing and replacing the battery. So I started RSD Lite. Notice now how my phone is identified only as "S Flash Neptune LTE2" in the first line of the program. It finally restored my phone. Moral of the story is Flash & Backup 3.0.058 is good for making backups, but not for restoring them. I'd love to know what I did wrong. Maybe someday we'll all find out. |
This ends the "backup" section of this tutorial. |
